Professor Piet Haers received both his medical and dental degrees from the University of Leuven, Belgium. He then began training in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Brugge, Belgium. This was continued in Arnhem, The Netherlands and was then completed in Zurich, Switzerland. From 1991 until 1999, he was Assistant Professor (Oberarzt) in the Department of Craniofacial Surgery at the University Hospital in Zurich under the direction of Professor Sailer. He is currently Clinical Director and Cleft Surgeon of the South-Thames Cleft Team at Guy’s Hospital in London, Honorary Visiting Professor at the Postgraduate Medical School of the University of Surrey and Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. He has 70 publications, 13 contributions to chapters and 30 invited lectures.
Professor Haers was Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1999 - 2011) and member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was elected as President-Elect of IAOMS in November 2011 and will be President in 2014 - 2015.
Primary and Secondary surgery for cleft lip and palate deformity, facial deformity and orthognatic surgery, surgical treatment of sleep apnoea, TMJ surgery, facial contouring including genioplasty and rhinoplasty.
